What is Permaculture? Why do I want designs that incorporate permaculture?

Permaculture stands for permanent agriculture. Its a systems way at looking at a place and analyzing all the components to build something that will benefit all pieces of the system. At Hopeful Roots, we are looking at the ecosystem in your backyard or community space; what life inhabit and use it, how they interact with the space and how to amplify its capacity for the betterment of the ecosystem as a whole. Because we look at all components and make smart decisions about what to change, the result is a well designed landscape that you can be proud to call home.

The purpose of the work we do is to create intelligent design which creates less work for you, fulfills your goals for your space and benefits the ecosystem around you. When we interact with an ecosystem in this way it is more likely to meet its highest capability for an ample amount of time.

What is Biodynamics? How can it improve the health of the soil and plants in my space?

Biodynamics was created by Rudolf Steiner and is used both commercially on farms, estates and for backyard gardeners. Rudolf Steiner was one of the firsts to try and establish an alternative agriculture with the intent to improve the deteriorating health of soil due to the overuse of chemical fertilizers. One of his main theories for Biodynamics is to view the farm as a living organism. Similarly to Permaculture, Rudolf Steiner knew that health a well being of given space hinged on looking at the ecosystem as a whole system and working to make sure that system was in balance.

Today there are several Biodynamic Preparations (preps) that can be used to improve the health, vibrancy, vitality and balance of both the plants and soil. At Hopeful Roots, after we have evaluated the soil health of your property we incorporate Biodynamic preps to support the soil and plants.

How come consultations and design work are not free?

Every site, the people who live there and the animals/plants that inhabit it, are different. Everything we do is custom-designed work. We also want the highest quality design to meet your goals. Part of the intelligently designed process is analysis. In our consultations, we are both getting to know your needs and doing a full assessment of the site you are on. Designs include estimates for installment work. We recognize that often people enjoy the labor and pride that goes into working on their home. We respect this and allow you the opportunity to use the design with this intention. We also provide installment work for those who are not ready to do the labor themselves. Again, every experience is customized to you, the learner, and your specific ecosystem. We are not looking to sell you something we don’t stand behind and this means that the work we do is thoughtfully considered every step of the way.
